I have been on a role lately, so far this week I have blocked three projects. Now I am just down to one more completed project to block and I am done.
You have seen the hat before here. I wore it for a long time with out blocking but I did not like the ripples and the point at the top of the hat so I finally decided to do something about it.
The red top is my vacation top. This was a great and quick project to work on.
Now all I have to do is keep up this momentum.
Until next time, Happy Knitting!

Work in Progress Wednesday: Al Socks
I finally started on my first 2013 project. I should have started this project sooner but it just did not work out. I first started the project using this yarn, but ran into a problem with the color, it was just too dark and the design of the socks just got lost in the color.
I decided to use another yarn and picked this one. Since the intended project for this yarn did not work out I stashed it away, I thought I was going to make the Mary Margaret Tam but that changed when I needed something for my socks.
I am very happy with my yarn choice now. The socks look great in the yarn and you can see the design. I am currently working on the right leg and I have gotten the 1st of 2 repeats needed. Now we will see if I can get it done in 16 days so I can stay on track.
Until next time, Happy Knitting!

For the Love of Shawls
I LOVE making Shawls. They are easy to carry around, you do not have to worry about the fit and they make amazing gifts. I am always on the lookout for the newest design to pop up on Ravelry. I recently showed you some of my favorite from my Malabrigio post last week. So far this month these beauties have popped up on my radar:
I think is the stripes that got me with this one. I gravitate to almost everything with stripes.
Dreambird was found by one of my G+ buddies, what would I do without them?
This designer does some amazing work. I learned about her from one of my G+ buddies.
Are these shawls not to die for? I just love them all and really, really want to make them NOW. If only I could just sit around and knit all day. *sigh*
While looking for these months goods I ran into this pretty little number:
Is that not just the prettiest shawl? The designer made this Shawl in Malabrigo Arroyo.
Do you like making Shawls? What Patterns are you currently coveting? Please post links, I would love to see your Shawl picks.
Until next time, Happy Knitting!

Emerald - 2013 Color of the Year
Rejoice Green lovers, Pantone has voted the color Emerald as the 2013 color of the Year.
Emerald is one of my favorite shades of green but as much as I like it I do not own very much in the color. The dominating color in my closet consists of mostly black and grey, which fits the stereotypical uniform of a New Yorker. Without much success I have tried to introduce color to my pallet. Is not that I do not like color, my favorite color is red, the brighter the red the happier I am and I also love jeweled toned colors which Emerald would fall into the mix is just black is so much easier.
When I was planning out this year's projects I had already decided that I was going to add more color. I have projects that will be made in lime green, yellow, hot pink and other anti-me colors. I think it will be the beginning of a beautiful relationship with color or a total train wreck.
In order to continue my trip outside of my color zone and in honor of the color Emerald, I will make one of my "2013 Projects" in Emerald Green. Being that I am still in one of my two yarn shopping months of the year, I am still keeping with my yarn diet.
The project that I will be making in the color of the year is Sotherton:
The designer sweater is already in a beautiful green color which sealed the deal for me to make it in the color. I have a few ideas for the yarn to use for this project:
![]() |
Blue Sky Alpacas Sport Weight in Emerald |
![]() |
Louisa Harding Orielle in Emerald |
![]() |
Patons Fairytale Soft DK in Emerald |
![]() |
Rowan Baby Merino Silk Dk in Emerald |
It is amazing the difference in the shades of Emerald from one yarn company to another. My favorite from the 4 above has to be the Louisa Harding Yarn. Not only is it a beautiful color green the gold metallic gives it a pretty sparkle. Not to mention it is 100% Baby Alpaca so you know it is super soft on the skin.
What do you think of this year's color? Will you be embracing the 2013 Color of the year?
Until next time, Happy Knitting!

Book Thursday: Finishing School a Master Class for Knitters
Book: Finishing School a Master Class for Knitters
Author: Deborah Newton
Book Rating: 4 of 5 stars
Everyday I look for ways to improve my crafts, because of this I have acquired books on different topics from books on how to sew better fitting trousers, to new metal smith techniques, even books on better make-up application. When I become interested in something I dive straight into the deep end, forget about the kiddie pool, I want to be in with the big kids, drown in knowledge.
This year I am swimming further into the deep end. I want to improve my knitting finishing technique. Things end up looking good when I complete a project, but I know that I can do better. So that is where the book "Finishing School A Master Class for Knitters" comes into play.
According to the description on Amazon "Deborah patiently takes her student-readers step by step through the ins and outs of blocking, seaming, edging, and embellishments, giving them the confidence and skills to create professional-looking knitwear." I thought that this book would be the perfect start for quest to become a better knitter.
The book has 161 pages and it is broken down as follows:
Chapter One: Finishing 101 - In this chapter the author talks about how to review a pattern to see if it is one that you should do, making a swatch, how to use a schematic drawing and what to have in your "Finishing Toolkit".
Chapter Two: Blocking Basics - The topic pretty much explains itself. She teaches you how to block, different blocking techniques and how it affects your work.
Chapter Three: Seaming - Here she teaches you different ways to seam your pieces.
Chapter Four: Edgings - All about trims and how to helps you work. It is not only about making it look pretty. In this chapter she teaches you how the edgings function on your knitting project.
Chapter Five: Buttons, Zippers, Pockets & More - It is all about the finishing detail. Here she teaches you about the types of buttons, how to pick the right button and buttonhole to make for the button you will use. Picking a zipper and installation steps. How to embroider and a bunch of other techniques. She does not go into great depth into each section but she gives you the basics to get you started.
Chapter Six: Special Finishes - Here she goes beyond knitting. Such as hot to felt, install a lining, Daring, steek, repurposing and a few other techniques.
Chapter Seven: Patterns - Here you have twelve patterns that you can make to test your brand new learned or improved skills.
Last Page: Casting On - Here she gives you three ways to cast on your project; Long-Tail, Cable and Backward loop cast on.
Over all I like the book. Easy to read and understand. Clear photos and I love that she gives very detailed direction without rambling. Straight to the point. I can see this being my go to book when I am finishing a project.
The workshops and tutorials help you practice your knew techniques with further detail before you jump into your project. Finally, the cheat sheets, these are tips and tricks scattered through out the book to make it even easier to complete your projects.
One thing that I noticed was that she spoke only of sweaters (with the exception of a scarf early on in the book). I am sure you can put into practice most of her techniques on other projects, but it would have been nice if one of the projects was a hat or gloves (though she does give you a nice cheat sheet tip for gloves and mittens) for us visual people.
Have you read this book? What do you think of it?
Until next time, Happy Knitting!

Work in Progress Wednesday: Vacation Top
While on vacation I decided to cast on a new top using my Berroco Vintage DK yarn. You may remember I originally started this project but decided that it was not the project for this yarn. After looking over patterns and trying to decide on what to make I finally made a decision and casted on this:
All I have left to do is the sleeves and I am leaving that for tomorrow. I plan to block the project either tomorrow evening or Friday depending on when I am done with the sleeves. If it all works out I would have finished this project in two weeks and three days and still have enough time for my socks.
What are you working on?
Until next time, Happy Knitting!

Malabrigio Book 4
I was waiting for the release of this pattern book since the project photos started popping up a few months ago, but everywhere I look it is sold out. One of my G+ peeps +jason simmons mentioned it over the weekend, after doing some searching and with the help of others in the G+ yarn community we found it.
Now that I know that it will soon be in my greedy little hands I am already thinking of making changes to my 2013 project plan. Here are my favorites from the book:
Now that you see the pretties above can you blame me for wanting to make some changes? I cannot wait till the book arrives and I can sit in my little knitting corner to drool over the pretty photos. I even have the perfect yarn for all these projects in my stash. So I can still keep my "shop my stash" challenge.
I still have not picked up my January project. I am slowly still working on finishing my vacation project. I meant to get it done over the weekend but I spent my time nursing a migraine, baking, cooking and hanging out at the Library, If I get this top done by the end of the week, I will still be on track to finish my socks by the end of the month. Wish me luck!
Until next time, Happy Knitting!!

2013 Project Plans - Part Three: Spinning
I am now the proud owner of an Ashford Kiwi 2. No more drop spindle for me! Well, I will still use my drop Spindles but I think I will be using them a lot less.
I still have to finish it and put it together, but since I have to do the finishing outside and leave it outside to dry that is a project that needs to wait till we get better weather. In the meantime I have some books that I am going to read while I wait for better weather.
The first book which I already own and have read before but plan to read again is "Start Spinning". This book was very helpful when I was learning how to spin and I think reading it again will give me a good refresher for when I start spinning. If you are interested in me giving a separate review on this book on "Book Thursday" let me know in the comments and I will queue it up.
Next book I do not own but plan on buying in the very near future is "The Intentional Spinner". I have heard good things about this book and would love to read it. If I have time over the weekend I will stop by the Library to check it out before I purchase it.
The last book on my to read list is "Spinning Wool: Beyond the Basics", I also do not own this book but will see if my Library has it and decide from there if I should get it. I am trying to stop my compulsive book shopping so I want to start borrowing the books from the Library and depending how useful/informative they are I may or may not buy the book.
My goal for this year is to spin enough yarn to at least make a hat. I have yet to spin enough yarn to make a large project.
So this concludes my goals for 2013. Hopefully by the end of this year I would have completed all my goals.
Until next time, Happy Knitting!

Book Thursday: Knits to Give - 30 Knitted Gifts Made with Love
We are only in day three of the New Year and I am already falling behind! The only thing I have gotten done on my Al socks are the cuffs and I am also working on a red top which should have been done by now, but I went back to work yesterday after being on vacation for over a week and have not touched the needles since the 1st of the year. Thus the reason why I did not have a WIP post yesterday. Not a good start to the year if I am already falling behind on my goals, right?
It has been a while since I have gotten any new knitting books. I made a wish list post on the books that I want to add to my Library and I got two of the five books, plus a wild card over the holiday's. Over the next few weeks on Thursday's I will write about my first impression on the books. Now that I have rambled on and on below is my first review!
Book: Knits to Give 30 Knitted Gifts Made with Love
Author: Debbie Bliss
Book Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
I am a selfish Knitter. I am not saying that I have never made anything for anyone, it just does not happen that often. This year I want to change that. I figured that if I want to save some money why not make some of the Birthday/Christmas/Baby/Graduation/etc. presents. As we all know this hobby can be very expensive and as much as I try to curb the spending it just does not work out.
While browsing books at Barnes and Noble I saw "Knits to Give: 30 Knitted Gifts Made with Love" and after flipping through the book decided to take it home with me. The book is divided into 5 sections For Her, For Him, For Baby, For Kids and For the Home. Each section has 6 patterns for a total of 30 patterns for you to make.
At the beginning of the book there is an intro from Debbie Bliss, an introduction to her yarns which I think is very handy, an abbreviations glossary and gift wrapping ideas.
While there are patterns on there that I would never make such as the Hot-Water Bottle Cover, there are many more that I cannot wait to make not only for others but for me too. Here are some of my favorite:

2013 Project Plans - Part Two
Happy New Year!! Welcome to the year 2013 and welcome to the updated blog. What do you all think of it? There are still a few more things that need to be done but the main changes I wanted to make are done.
Today is part two of my planned 2013 projects. There is also a part three which will posted on Friday. Part three is more about what I want to do to become better at my crafts. Like classes that I want to take, techniques that I want to learn or skills that I want to improve on.
Projects:
July: Fighting Words, The wonderful +Deena White gifted me this pattern last month. There is no way that I will be able to make them before this winter is over but I will definitely have them ready for next winter. This is the only project I do not have yarn for so on my Birthday Yarn shopping trip this is one pattern I will be shopping for. I thought some Spud & Chloe Fine yarn would be perfect for this project. Their yarn is always so vibrant and gorgeous.
August: Dinner in the Eiffel Tower Shawl, this pattern has been in my radar for most of 2012. It is such a pretty shawl. The only reason why I have not made it is because I cannot decide on what color yarn I want to make it in. I have previously bought a red color yarn, also a dark blue and green. Each time I decided that it was not the right color and I would end up using the yarn for something else. I have finally decided that I want to make it in a light color, maybe I can fine two skeins of Madelinetosh DK in "Antique Lace"? Let us see how lucky I get this month.
September: Sir Knight Helmet and Seedy Bow Band, These are the only Crochet projects I have planned for this year. I will be making 2 Knight Helmet's and 1 Seedy Bow Band. September is the start of my Christmas present crafting. The helmets will go to my nephew and my friends daughter, the bow will go to sister.
October: Citron, The Christmas presents continue. This one will go to Step-Mom. I have a pretty light yellow lace yarn and a green lace yarn. I have not decided in which color I want to make it yet but I know either will be beautiful.
November: Sotherton, this is probably my favorite pattern from the 2012 Summer issue of Jane Austen Knits magazine. I bought this amazing blue Berroco Vintage DK yarn just for this project. Since November is NaKniSweMo month I will practice patience and make this sweater for the challenge.
December: Space Girl, for the month of December I will be making another sweater. Since I take a long vacation in the month of December a sweater is the perfect project to work on during my relaxation time.
Back up Projects: These are projects that I will have waiting in the wings just in case I finish a project early in the month or a project that I had planned is just not working out with the yarn I had planned for it. I am not posting photos for these, but they will be linked to the Ravelry project page.
If I stick to my plan by the end of 2013 I would have put a considerable dent to my yarn stash. As I stated in yesterday's blog post I only get this month and November as yarn shopping months. Also, I can only shop one time each month. So for January it will be on my birthday and November it will be on Black Friday.
What projects will you be working on this year? Let me know if the comments below!
Until next time, Happy Knitting!
